By being involved at the outset of a transaction we can provide comprehensive advice to minimise the tax exposure, considering all the business tax, VAT, international and employee issues as appropriate.

Job Description

Purpose of Role

As a Tax Assistant you will be responsible for the overall service to a portfolio of clients, principally consisting of preparation of corporation tax computations and returns. You will also be responsible for reporting to and supporting the Manager and Partner group on larger projects as required.

Additionally, the role will include elements of VAT and PAYE where the team requires support. 

Reports to – Senior Manager

Key responsibilities: 

Client work including:

  • Prepare corporate tax computations, election control sheets and client review sheets
  • Review Alphatax reports to ensure all relevant prompts are cleared and deadlines met
  • Attend and contribute to client meetings and internal meetings as required  
  • Data analysis as required
  • Prepare VAT returns and support with compliance matters to ensure accurate, prompt and efficient delivery
  • Assist with employment tax issues including preparation of P11Ds
  • Technical research and supporting team in client service delivery
  • Deals with HMRC correspondence including responding to enquiries
  • Prepare billing analyses and draft fee notes

Training and development

  • Attend internal training sessions
  • External training provided by Kaplan to support your exam studies

Assisting other staff members

  • Provide support to other staff members and partners on chargeable and non-chargeable work when required

Compliance

  • Ensuring relevant client deadlines are met
  • Ensuring S&W procedures are adhered to
  • Involvement in some departmental administrative tasks

  • Must be able to plan workload in order to prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines and cope with pressure 

Written and Oral communication

  • Good written communication skills are necessary to draft correspondence with clients and HMRC to explain technical issues in an easily understandable manner
  • Must have good inter-personal skills to be able to liaise with clients and other staff members

  • Meeting deadlines and responding to client needs.

Team Work

  • We are a small team with a number of team members at various levels of study which means that all have to work together to assist each other to deliver to clients during periods of study leave

  • Keep abreast of relevant tax rules/changes and the impact on your clients’ businesses

Candidate Profile

Education/Qualifications:

  • Relevant professional qualification (ideally ATT, ACA or ACCA) and either studying towards or planning to complete the CTA qualification.

Key Experience/Skills:

  • Strong IT skills
  • Demonstrable tax experience gained within the professional and/or industry
  • Demonstrable broader knowledge and practical application of tax and accounting
  • Appetite to grow business development skills
